: All trials reported herein were performed in the Animal Care Unit (biocontainment level 2 facilities) at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. The design and experimental procedures were in compliance with the Canadian Council for Animal Care and approved by the Animal Research Ethics Board (Protocol #20180046). The ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines [CitationRef removed] were adhered to and are reported in Additional file InternalRef removed. Animal care staff and researchers observed every animal twice daily and monitored clinical status according to Humane Intervention Points (HIP) (Additional file InternalRef removed). Trial length was established at a fixed time after the recovery of most pigs, except when their wellbeing was compromised. The latter included unresponsiveness, rectal temperature above 41.5 °C or below 35 °C, extreme hyperemia, or bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, tachypnea and dyspnea, or persistent MMHD with moderate emaciation. Euthanasia was by cranial captive bolt followed by exsanguination.
