: Local Ethic Committee approval was obtained for research on retained autopsy tissues after written informed consent given by the patients during life or by their next of kin after death. Data collection of clinically suspected CJD cases is an integral part of the National CJD surveillance study, which was approved by the Ethic Committee of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (CE-ISS 09/266 on 29 May 2009).
