: All methods were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations. An ethical clearance was obtained from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Mekelle University, College of Health Sciences. The registration number of the ethical clearance for this paper was MU/CHS/SC/20/2019. Written permission was obtained from the Tigray regional health bureau. Study participants were briefed about the objective of the study by data collectors. Participants were informed that they had the full right to refuse to participate in the study and can interrupt the study if not comfortable. Confidentiality of the information was assured and the privacy of the study population was respected. Written informed consent was obtained from each study participant. There was no procedure that could harm pregnant women and they have received all the necessary routine nutritional and health services regardless of their participation in this study. At the end of data collection, pregnant women were counseled about nutrition and hygiene.
