: This study was requested by Planckendael Zoo and performed during translocation procedures where animals were only anesthetized if they did not voluntarily enter the transport box. The sampling took place within the framework of the EAZA Ex-situ Program (EEP) for bonobos. The Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde van Antwerpen (KMDA) Ethics Committee presumes there is a very low risk that the applied electro- ejaculation procedure and /or urethral catheterization under full anesthesia might cause discomfort and/or welfare problems for the animals involved, and consequently provided their full approval for these procedures. KDMA is a zoological association and is owner of Planckendael Zoo. In any communications regarding this particular procedure and its ethical approval please refer to the document reference number: EC-4/SGZ(11–02-20).
